Joseph “Joe” Knapp, of Somerville, died peacefully at Robert Wood Johnson Somerset on Saturday, December 10, 2016. Known for his million dollar smile and hearty handshake, he was a resident of Somerville since 1958. Joe was originally from Windber, PA and raised in Mahanoy City, PA.
A graduate from Mahanoy City High School, he was a star lineman who earned four varsity football letters.
Joe saw active duty during the Korean War, having served in the infantry and transportation divisions for two years. After receiving his honorable discharge, he returned home to Mahanoy City and married the former Helen McCullough of Shenandoah, Pennsylvania, his loving wife of 62 years. She was at his bedside when he passed.
Joe retired from United Parcel Service over 25 years ago and enjoyed an active retirement. Although burdened with a series of health issues in recent years, Joe never lost his incredible upbeat attitude or that winning smile.
Joe is survived by his wife, Helen Knapp, a daughter, Kathleen Barry from Hillsborough, a son, Joseph Knapp from Woodland Park, Colorado, and four grandsons who were the apple of his eye.
Visitation will be at the Cusick Funeral Home, Somerville, on Wednesday, December 14, from 2-4pm and 7-9pm.
Joe was a long time parishioner at Immaculate Conception Church and a Mass of Christian Burial will be held there at 10:30am on Thursday,December 15. Interment will immediately follow at Brigadier General Wm.C.Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Wrightsville, NJ.
