James Melitski, "Jim", died on December 26th at home with his family by his side. He was born in Somerville, NJ in November 1945. He graduated from Somerville High School, Trenton State College and graduate school at Kean College. He married his high school sweetheart, Barbara, and moved to Branchburg in 1970. He was a beloved and dedicated husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, coach, teacher and principal. He devoted his life to his family, community and will not be forgotten.
Jim taught science in the Somerville Middle School, where he coached wrestling, football and served as vice principal. He was also a vice principal at Delaware Valley Regional High School and Heritage Middle School in Livingston. He served for more than twenty five years on the Branchburg Township Planning Board and was chairman for more than a decade. He was active in youth sports and mentoring organizations, volunteering as a coach or leader for baseball, softball, wrestling and with Boy Scout Troop 185. He was an avid outdoorsman and spent much of his retirement hunting and fishing with family and friends, as well as traveling with his wife and family.
He is survived by his wife Barbara, and children James (40), Cathy (35) and Gregory (33) and three grandchildren, James Patrick, Jonathan Gregory and Sandra Kathryn. He is also survived by his mother, Kathryn Melitski, brother, Joel Melitski and his sister, Maryjane Hydro.
Visitation will be held Sunday, December 30, at the Cusick Funeral Home in Somerville from 3pm to 7pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11am on Monday, December 31, at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Three Bridges.
