Frances Ewankov Saunders, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend entered this life June 25, 1924 in Bronx, NY and passed in peace February 14 2014 at her home in Raritan, where she lived for 53 years. Strong, dedicated mother to son, Robert Saunders of Ventura, CA, Vietnam veteran, retired Mechanical Engineer (DOD-Navy), and father of five.
Kind, compassionate mother-in-law to Waylisa Saunders (CA). Loving, vivacious grandmother to Paul (TX), Shawn (AZ), Bohdana(HI), Amalea (HI), and Jennie-Rose (CA). Blessed with nine great-grandchildren who brought her much joy.
Survived by sister and best friend, Jennie E. Koteles (NJ), the last living sibling of eight. Celebrated by countless family and noted friends, the Cliffords, Cahills, Mahoneys, Vilceks, Kendras, Horvats, Ewankovs and the Bardars. Daughter to the late Anna and Stephen Ewankov. Widow of Allen Saunders.
Graduated from Somerville High School (‘41); RN at Kings County Hospital (‘46) in Brooklyn, NY; double major BA & BS from Rutgers University (‘70); and Masters in Health Science from Jersey City State College (‘76). Retired Chief of Nursing (‘85) from the VA Hospital in St. Louis, MO.
Enthusiastic member of the Masterwork Chorus, singing in Avery Fisher Hall, Carnegie Hall, and the Vatican, as well as St. Bernard and Metuchen Diocese Choir. Accomplished in her field; world traveler; charitable caretaker; independent, patient, and gracious; lover of people, animals, nature, food, culture,and puzzles.
Visitation at the Cusick Funeral Home, Somerville, on Friday, February 28, from 2-4pm & 6-8pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Bernard Church, Bridgewater, on March 1st, 10am. Followed by her final resting place next to her mother at St. Bernard Cemetery.
